“Wasted Eyes” is the sixth track on Amaarae‘s sophomore album, Fountain Baby (2023). It is one of the album’s most musically complex and ambitious pieces, built around a radical interpolation that perfectly captures the feeling of obsessive, self-destructive desire.

The song is a collaborative effort involving Amaarae and her frequent production partners, weaving together diverse sonic elements from around the world to express complex emotional volatility.

The track is categorized as Alté, Experimental Pop, and R&B. It is most critically noted for its maximalist production which features striking contrasts: lush, melodic orchestration (including kora and violins) is pitted against harsh, gunshot-like percussion and dynamic bass shifts. Its unique structure is based on the interpolation of the Japanese folk song “Battaki” by Umeko Ando.
