Former gospel singer Osinachi’s spouse sentenced to death for the murder of the late singer.

The late gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu’s spouse, Peter Nwachukwu, has received a death sentence by hanging for the culpable homicide that resulted in the passing of the late artist.

The decision was delivered by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, on Monday, April 28, 2025, resulting in the death sentence for Osinachi Nwachukwu’s spouse.

Nwachukwu was found guilty of causing his wife’s death on April 8, 2022, through a history of abuse that culminated in her tragic passing. The court determined that the prosecution had fulfilled the burden of proof, leading to his conviction on charges including culpable homicide, spousal assault, and child cruelty.

Nwachukwu was brought to court on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) representing the Federal Government, facing a total of 23 counts. Throughout the proceedings, 17 witnesses were called, including two of Osinachi’s children, who testified against their father. The prosecution also submitted 25 pieces of evidence in court.

In his defense, Nwachukwu testified and called four additional witnesses while providing four pieces of evidence. His defense attorney, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency, urging the court to display mercy in its sentencing. Nonetheless, the prosecution attorney, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, requested a severe penalty in accordance with legal standards.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging for the primary charge of culpable homicide. He also received additional prison terms for other offenses, including two years each for several counts, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for specific charges. Nwachukwu was assigned various imprisonment terms for other counts, including six months for one charge and three years for another.

This ruling concludes a widely publicized case that has brought attention to issues of domestic violence and legal justice in Nigeria, particularly following the untimely death of Osinachi Nwachukwu, a cherished gospel artist.
